WISER neuromodulation program is a sister program of the INSTAR clinics at Department of Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health And Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, India. It explores the clinical application of weak intensity electrical / magnetic / ultrasonic energies to treat debilitating psychiatric symptoms and the neural underpinnings of their action mechanism.
Weak intensity electrical / magnetic / ultrasonic energies have been shown to modulate brain plasticity—the brain's ability to modify itself. These techniques show promise in treating psychiatric disorders through enhancement of deficient brain functions. These techniques also facilitate re-integration of psychiatric patients by ameliorating the recalcitrant psychiatric symptoms that interfere with healthy functioning and give rise to abnormal experiences among psychiatric patients. |
The weak intensity brain stimulation techniques under the WISER program include a) Electrical: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS), Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS), Transcranial Pulsed Current Stimulation (tPCS), and Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (tRNS), Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) and transcranial Vagal Nerve Stimulation (tVNS); b) Magnetic: Low Field Magnetic Stimulation (LFMS) and c) Ultrasonic: Transcranial Pulsed Low-intensity, Low Frequency Focused Ultrasonic Stimulation.
Several studies on tDCS, HD-tDCS and tACS have been concluded and a few are in progress. Pilot evaluation for tPCS, tRNS, GVS & tVNS protocols are in progress. With regards to ultrasonic neuromodulation, a research project will be initiated soon.
